The Heartless are the main antagonists in the Kingdom Hearts franchise.
History[]
Kingdom Hearts[]
The Heartless most likely escaped the Realm of Darkness in Kingdom Hearts: Union X, a coursed havoc around Daybreak Town. They possibly went back from were they came from before the beginning of the Keyblade War.
In Birth by Sleep, Master Xehanort used a bunch of Neo Shadows to train his apprentice Ventus. However since the Neo Shadows overpowered him, Master Xehanort dismissed them and extracted a part of Ventus' heart a created a being known as Vanitas. After Aqua saved Terra-Xehanort from entering the Realm of Darkness, only to trapped there herself, Heartless will try to attack Aqua until she gives in to the Darkness.
In 0.2 Birth by Sleep: A Fragmentary Passage, it is shown that the Heartless are still hunting Aqua in the Realm of Darkness.
The Heartless made their first appearance in Kingdom Hearts, the Heartless were tearing down worlds and ultimately destroyed the Destiny Islands, but not before the main trio left the island. The Heartless were also seen in Traverse Town stealing the actual Hearts from people and trying to attack Sora, until he meets up with Donald and Goofy where a Guard Armor appeared to fight them. The Heartless would continue to fight the three heroes as well as the allies that they would make. A Soldier stole a heart from the Queen of Hearts and a Stealth Sneak went to use Clayton to fight against Sora, Donald, Goofy and Tarzan. When the three heroes went to seal the Keyhole in Traverse Town, they went to fight against the Guard Armour once again, only for it to into the Opposite Armour and was defeated. Oogie Boogie went to use an artificial heart in hopes to control the Heartless, but was not able to and was transformed with his building. When Sora was captured by Captain Hook and Riku went to use the Heartless to create Shadow Sora and later left. At Castle Oblivion, a sentient Heartless calling himself Ansem the Seeker of Darkness was shown controlling almost all of the events that where happening and was possessing Riku, he later left a Behemoth to keep an eye on the keyhole of Castle Oblivion. Sora, Donald and Goofy later went to the The End of the World, a type of homeworld for the Heartless and so fought against them, Charnibog and went to defeat Ansem and a Darkside. This in turn restored almost all of the worlds that the Heartless consumed.
In Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, Heartless or at least visions of Heartless went to fight against Sora and Riku during their run through Castle Oblivion and to fight and defeat members of Organization XIII.
In Kingdom Hearts II, the Heartless returned to serve Pete and to fight against Sora, Donald and Goofy once again. Some of the Heartless took the 100 Acre Woods book and torn away some of the pages into the wild. At Aggrobar, Pete summoned the Volcanic Lord & Blizzard Lord to fight against Sora, Donald, Goofy and Aladdin to distract them, but was defeated. In the Land of Dragons, a Dragon was turned into a Heartless known as the Storm Rider, but was also defeated. Xemnas later used the Heartless in Radiant Garden in hopes to finish his artificial Kingdom Hearts. Xemnas later went to use the Heartless in Radiant Garden to complete his artificial Kingdom Hearts, the Heartless would continue to fight against the three heroes and their allies up until they went to the World That Never Was. After the destruction of the Artificial Kingdom Hearts, the Hearts that were used to create it turned into Shadows and possibly other Pureblood Heartless and went to storm the Organization's castle. It is believed that these Heartless were defeated in battle.
Some versions of the Heartless also appear in Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded, to fight against Data Sora.
The Heartless returned in Kingdom Hearts III, where they would once again fight against Sora, Donald and Goofy. They first appeared near Mount Olympus and also went to fight against Hercules. The Heartless where shown teaming up with the Unversed in Monsters Inc. and both Mademe Gothel as well as Prince Hans turned into Heartless, being Grim Guardianess and Sköll respectively. The Heartless, along with the Nobodies and Unversed went to fight against The three heroes up until the Demon Tide appeared. The Demon Tide originally consumed everything in site, including the heroes, however Sora returned everything almost back to normal and went to fight against the lard Demon Tide with the help of the Past Keyblade Wielders. It is believed that the Heartless activity died down after Master Xehanort was defeated.
The Heartless returned in Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory, where they would fight against Sora, Donald, Goofy Aqua, Ventus, Terra, Roxas, Axel, Xion, Riku, Meow Wow and Komory Bat.
